Canadian ChapterCanadian Chapter: CWEF assists Windsor students in the development of reading skills. Here is a slide show showing materials purchased from CWEF donations. The first project initiated by the Canadian Chapter began in the fall of 2005 and involved the purchase of "levelled reading" text books for General Brock Elementary School. Levelled reading books are designed to present relatively complex material for students who cannot read at the level normally needed to absorb that material; for example, a grade seven student needing to understand a concept in science, but able to read at only the grade four level. The area of Windsor that Brock Elementary School services traditionally has been home to many recently arrived immigrant families for whom English is not their first language and this presents the school with a special set of problems. Levelled reading books are quite expensive, and to help out, CWEF contributed just over $2,000 to enhance Brock's reading resources in this important area of learning. We intend not only to monitor the success of this program, but to actively seek out other innovative ways in which CWEF can assist in the education of Canadian young people Here is a thank you letter from Brock Elementary School.. |
